The feel-good program that delivers a confidence boost to cancer patients

Upon hearing about the work done by Look Good Feel Better, a national community service program dedicated to teaching cancer patients how to manage the appearance-related side-effects caused by cancer treatment, Nicole Jervis knew it was something she wanted to be involved with. “I have worked in many different charities and what I liked about Look Good Feel Better was that it was making an immediate impact in the life of someone going through cancer treatment,” says Nicole, the program’s Fundraising Manager. “Through providing cancer patients with an opportunity to learn new skills to deal with the physical changes that their treatment will cause, we are hopefully giving them the confidence they need to get through a difficult time.”

A major aim of the workshops is inclusiveness: the Look Good Feel Better program is free and open to anyone going through any type of cancer treatment. “Our workshops are held in over 180 venues across Australia to make sure we are reaching those in need. We don’t want people having to travel hours to benefit from a workshop – we want them to be close to home and able to meet others within their community going through a similar experience.”

The IMB Bank Community Foundation’s support of Look Good Feel Better over the last three years has led to the funding of several workshops. “I have grown up in the Sutherland Shire and still live here,” says Nicole. “These workshops are personal to me as they help people within my own community that I see and talk to each day. Support from ICF has allowed us to run six workshops and directly support over 75 local residents each year.”

Nicole says a large part of her job satisfaction comes from seeing the positive effect of her fundraising efforts. “At one workshop, a lady who’d had cancer for over a decade attended. She was incredibly hesitant to take part but eventually allowed a volunteer to conceal some redness on her skin. She burst into tears, crying from sheer happiness. She said she had given up on going out due to the appearance of her skin and for the first time in 10 years she looked in the mirror and could see her old self. People may look at our program and think it’s not that important but the empowerment and confidence that our workshops provide help in a very different way to medicine.”
