Renovating on a budget

Marina from The School of Renovating shares her tips on how you can renovate on a budget and get the best deals possible to save time and money.

  Prepare a budget
Renovators often start to make changes to their property without a plan or a budget resulting in duplication and unnecessary expense. Check out our budget planner and calculators to work out your renovation budget.
  Do your research
It’s important to make sure you’re getting the best deal on materials. Research and compare prices at several stores before purchasing and don’t forget to check online options for even better discounts.
  Organised and economies of scale
A way to save money is to be organised so you are able to take advantage of economies of scale. Save by grouping your orders and buying as much as you can from one supplier. Emailing your total order to five or six suppliers could help to get you the best price. Buying well in advance allows you time to shop for specials and negotiate prices. It’s hard to negotiate the price of, say a toilet, when you have the plumber on site on an hourly rate waiting to install it.
  Consider standard sizes
Think about standard sizes to avoid the expense of custom-made items. This can apply to many things including doors, windows, shower screens, glass panelling, vanities, bathroom cabinets, wardrobes and window dressing. Flatpack joinery can be your budget’s best friend. There are plenty of large chains and several smaller suppliers who sell good quality flat packs.

In Summary

Renovating on a budget is easy if you follow a few steps – be highly organised, batch order, plan for standard sizes and take advantage of the enormous range of off-the-shelf products now available to renovators.
