The professor daring to dream

With technology shrinking at such a rapid rate, scientists are engineering devices that are so small they can be inserted into the body and perform functions at a cellular, molecular and atomic level.

One such scientist is Professor Gordon Wallace, the Director and Founder of the University of Wollongong's Intelligent Polymer Research Institute and Executive Research Director at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science

Wallace is a pioneer in the emerging field of nanobionics, a field that has already produced the Bionic Ear and in the future, has the potential to drastically change the capabilities of modern medicine.

Wallace and his team at UOW have been working on a number of remarkable projects including a bionic implant that will stop seizures in epilepsy sufferers before they happen.

The device utilises organic conducting materials in an implant inserted directly into the brain that will pick up signals from the brain that give warnings of an impending epileptic seizure. They will then use their polymer structure and the function built into it, to incorporate anti-epileptic drugs, using the information coming from the brain and transposing that into a reaction that involves localised release of anti-epileptic drugs exactly where they are needed.

You can see more from Professor Wallace in his 2012 TedX talk below

Professor Gordon Wallace will be part of a panel at Mind Shift as part of the Blender Festival in Wollongong on Friday 2nd October.

Mind Shift is a single-day forum to challenge perceptions, experts and the obvious in a Q&A setting.

Each of the Q&A sessions will feature a panel of four industry experts from the tech, music and arts spheres. These sessions will put the audience on the front foot with interactive digital initiatives and a playfully-delivered verdict.

Mind Shift tackles some serious topics, but welcomes the sublime and quirky. These sessions are an integral part of the festival and the aim of this event is to help pollinate ideas throughout the community in the hope of building relationships and opening up opportunities for those attending.

IMB Bank is proud to sponsor the Mind Shift event. Head to the Blender Festival website to grab your tickets.

Tickets - Students / Pensioners $10, Adults $25, VIP (front row seats, snack box) $35 + booking fee
