Fusing fashion and function

Ben Moir’s philosophy is simple. Technology takes up an enormous part of our lives however it is distracting us from actually living our real lives and taking away our eyes and our ears. Faced with a world where technology is moving too fast to document, he believes we can only break new ground in innovation if we get back and experience the real world, and not through the lens of a computer.

One of his success stories has been the Alert Shirt for Fox Sports that connects you to the sports players that you are watching so that you can feel what they are feeling.

The Alert Shirt simulates five key sensations described by players:

  • Impact – the shot of a big hit when players collide
  • Pressure – a thumping heartbeat whenever the game is on the line
  • Exhaustion – lungs burning every time your team puts in a hard effort
  • Adrenaline – a rush of blood when your team is on the up
  • Despair – the sinking feeling of every costly mistake

With the Alert Shirt, real-time sports data is transmitted via a smartphone app to the electronics within the jersey. The Alert Shirt then converts the data into powerful sensations that simulate live sports action.

To sport fans this might seem like the ultimate viewing experience but Moir’s products get even more interactive.

The uptake of other wearable tech ventures such as Google Glass has been slow and Moir cites a now infamous tweet commenting that Google Glass is like Segway for your face. His priority is not doing tech for tech’s sake and integrating fashion with technology.

Moir, along with business partner Billie Whitehouse, of Whitehouse Institute of Design, understands that for wearable tech to succeed it has to be contextual and unobtrusive. Their company We:eX, a socially driven wearable technology company is out to fuse fashion and technology to bring us a user experience that allows us to better experience the real world.

Ben Moir will be speaking at Mind Shift as part of the Blender Festival in Wollongong on Friday 2nd October.

Mind Shift is a single-day forum to challenge perceptions, experts and the obvious in a Q&A setting.

Each of the Q&A sessions will feature a panel of four industry experts from the tech, music and arts spheres. These sessions will put the audience on the front foot with interactive digital initiatives and a playfully-delivered verdict.

Mind Shift tackles some serious topics, but welcomes the sublime and quirky. These sessions are an integral part of the festival and the aim of this event is to help pollinate ideas throughout the community in the hope of building relationships and opening up opportunities for those attending.

IMB Bank is proud to sponsor the Mind Shift event. Head to the Blender Festival website to grab your tickets.

Tickets - Students / Pensioners $10, Adults $25, VIP (front row seats, snack box) $35 + booking fee.
