140 years on, supporting our customers and community
is more important than ever.

For us, stability and support have been at the core of our business since 1880.

From honourable but humble beginnings in Wollongong Australia we’ve helped our members realise their financial goals and been there for them through thick and thin. Through mutual support, we have grown alongside our communities to be one of Australia’s most enduring financial institutions.

To each of our customers and our community partners, thank you for being part of our story so far.

Here are some of the milestones of our history. We look forward to creating more with you.

THE PROPOSAL

In Wollongong, a small agricultural town south of Sydney, moves were afoot to build the foundation for a building society. As 1880 opened, Mr Robert Boyd wrote a letter to the Wollongong Argus describing the advantages of a building society to working men, “enabling them to become their own landlords, and to stand on the threshold of their own door and with justifiable pride exclaim ‘This is my own home!’”

The application was signed on April 6 and by April 10, the Illawarra Mutual Building Society was a reality.

EARLY SUCCESS

In May, the first Annual General Meeting of IMB Bank was held. Chairman George Hewlett reported that the society 'managed to hold its own and a little more'. Investing shares were paid 5%.
